Everyone is free to believe and think whatever they wish – this is the norm in Europe – and it is so not by chance. In recent years, however, tendencies have developed that are diametrically opposed to the idea of freedom of expression.

Illiberal narratives, language regulations and cancel culture seek to dominate the public discourse, going as far as to judge whether an opinion is morally permissible or not. Freedom of religion also seems to be coming under increasing pressure. In addition to an increase in anti-Semitism and vandalism against churches and places of worship of different religions, we also see legal developments that conflict with the freedom of religion.

Is this enough to say that freedom of expression and fundamental rights are under threat in Europe? What must or should be done to protect the foundations of freedom?
